The city of Cadiz is the capital of the same named province. Cadiz is located on a peninsula and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the marshlands of the Bahia de Cadiz. It was a long time the biggest city with nearly 130.000 inhabitants. Due to limited surface/space on the peninsula all the development and increasing population happens in the bay area with San Fernando, Puerto Real, El Puerto de Santa Maria - all of these towns with population of over 70.000. The biggest city of the province is the sherry capital Jerez de la Frontera.
Cadiz may be the oldest city in Europe. It was founded around 1100 BC from the Phoenicians as a trading base and called Gadir. In the 18th and 19th century Cadiz as gateway and main trade site with the American colonies was the richest and the most liberal and modern city in Spain.
2012 is a very special year for the city. Cadiz will be the Iberoamerican Capital of Culture that year. The whole year there will be top cultural events - concerts, cinema, theater - celebrating the 200th birthday of the first Spanish Constitution: La Pepa. -
